How we score Durham, NC dog day care centers
What this page covers
This guide currently scores 136 dog day care center businesses in Durham, NC. Every score comes from the same published rubric, applied the same way to every listing. No facility pays to move up, and no facility gets a different formula because of who runs it. This page explains exactly how the number next to each name gets built, why we weighted it the way we did, and where the data runs thin.
The five signals, heaviest first
Each business gets a composite score from 0 to 100, built from five measured signals. Here they are in order of how much they count:
- Sentiment, 28%. A synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, weighing praise against recurring complaints.
- Rating, 26%. The business's aggregate star rating on Google.
- Volume, 20%. How many reviews the business has, log-scaled so a facility with hundreds of reviews doesn't get buried by one with a handful of five-star ratings, but also isn't the only thing that matters.
- Recency, 15%. How recently people have actually left reviews. A daycare that hasn't been reviewed in two years tells you a lot less than one reviewed last month.
- Completeness, 11%. Whether the listing has a working phone number, website, posted hours, and a real address. Basic stuff, but it matters when you're trying to book a tour or drop off a dog on a Monday morning.
Why sentiment carries the most weight
A star average by itself hides patterns. Two daycares can both sit at 4.5 stars, and one of them has that rating because owners keep mentioning the same problem: dogs coming home smelling like they were never let outside, or a front desk that never answers the phone during pickup hours. The star number alone won't show you that. Reading what people actually wrote, and doing it across the recent review history rather than cherry-picking a few, is the only way to catch a pattern like that before you commit your dog to it. That's why sentiment is weighted above the raw star rating here, not instead of it.
Why the other signals matter
Rating still counts for over a quarter of the score because it's the fastest signal of overall satisfaction, and it's what most people check first. Volume matters because a facility with four reviews and a perfect average hasn't really been tested yet, log-scaling keeps that from being overweighted next to a place with three hundred reviews. Recency matters because staff, management, and even a facility's cleanliness can change in a year. Completeness is the smallest weight but still counts: a daycare that hasn't bothered to post hours or list a working number is harder to trust with a drop-off schedule.
The honest limits
We don't republish reviews here, we synthesize them and link out to Google so you can read the originals yourself and judge the source directly. Businesses with few recent reviews produce a low-confidence score, and we label those listings as such, because a score built on three reviews from 2021 isn't telling you much about what happens today. Scores are earned strictly from this rubric and the underlying data. When paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it's labelled clearly and never changes a score. If any list on this site involved editor-reviewed picks or ordering, that's disclosed on that page itself. See our best daycare and boarding picks for an example of how that works.
Who's behind this
This directory is published by Doggy Rank IQ, run by Caprice McManus since 2022. Caprice has spent 20 years working as a professional dog walker and pet sitter in Durham, and still does that work daily, helping local owners with training, feeding, and finding care they trust. She started this guide after watching too many people pick a daycare off a plain Google search with no real way to compare options. Her own dog walking and sitting business is not included in these rankings, and no facility gets different treatment based on any relationship with her. Editorial oversight of the rankings sits with Clara Tan, Senior Editor. You can reach the publisher directly at cmcmanus1012@gmail.com or (919) 459-9538, or visit doggyrankiq.com. How current is the data
Data behind these scores is refreshed monthly. Each listing also carries its own "last verified" stamp, so you can see when that specific business was last checked rather than assuming the whole directory updates at once.
FAQ
- How often are the scores updated?
- The underlying data is refreshed monthly. Each listing also shows a last verified stamp so you can see when that specific business was last checked.
- Can a business pay to improve its score?
- No. Scores come only from the rubric and data described on this page. When paid placement exists anywhere on the site, it is labelled clearly and never affects the score.
- Why does sentiment count more than the star rating?
- A star average can hide a pattern, like two businesses sharing the same rating while one collects repeated complaints about the same issue. Reading what recent reviews actually say catches that in a way an average score can't.
- What does a low-confidence score mean?
- It means the business has few recent reviews. We label these listings so you know the score is based on limited data rather than treating it the same as a business with a long, recent review history.
