The five signals, heaviest first

Each business gets a composite score from 0 to 100, built from five measured signals. Here they are in order of how much they count:

• Sentiment, 28%. A synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, weighing praise against recurring complaints.
• Rating, 26%. The business's aggregate star rating on Google.
• Volume, 20%. How many reviews the business has, log-scaled so a facility with hundreds of reviews doesn't get buried by one with a handful of five-star ratings, but also isn't the only thing that matters.
• Recency, 15%. How recently people have actually left reviews. A daycare that hasn't been reviewed in two years tells you a lot less than one reviewed last month.
• Completeness, 11%. Whether the listing has a working phone number, website, posted hours, and a real address. Basic stuff, but it matters when you're trying to book a tour or drop off a dog on a Monday morning.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average by itself hides patterns. Two daycares can both sit at 4.5 stars, and one of them has that rating because owners keep mentioning the same problem: dogs coming home smelling like they were never let outside, or a front desk that never answers the phone during pickup hours. The star number alone won't show you that. Reading what people actually wrote, and doing it across the recent review history rather than cherry-picking a few, is the only way to catch a pattern like that before you commit your dog to it. That's why sentiment is weighted above the raw star rating here, not instead of it.

Why the other signals matter

Rating still counts for over a quarter of the score because it's the fastest signal of overall satisfaction, and it's what most people check first. Volume matters because a facility with four reviews and a perfect average hasn't really been tested yet, log-scaling keeps that from being overweighted next to a place with three hundred reviews. Recency matters because staff, management, and even a facility's cleanliness can change in a year. Completeness is the smallest weight but still counts: a daycare that hasn't bothered to post hours or list a working number is harder to trust with a drop-off schedule.

The honest limits

We don't republish reviews here, we synthesize them and link out to Google so you can read the originals yourself and judge the source directly. Businesses with few recent reviews produce a low-confidence score, and we label those listings as such, because a score built on three reviews from 2021 isn't telling you much about what happens today.
