Completeness, 11%: whether basic listing details, phone, website, hours, and address, are present and accurate.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average can hide a lot. Two daycares can both sit at 4.3 stars, but one has scattered minor complaints while the other has a repeated pattern of, say, dogs coming home with injuries, or no-shows on pickup communication. The average alone won't show you that. Reading what recent reviews actually say, and looking for what keeps coming up, is the only way to catch a pattern like that before you drop your dog off somewhere for eight hours. That's why sentiment is weighted higher than the star rating itself: it's the signal that reflects lived experience rather than a single blended number.

Why the other signals matter

Rating still matters because it's the fastest signal of overall satisfaction, and it's weighted second-highest for that reason. Volume matters because a 5.0 rating from three reviews tells you a lot less than a 4.6 from three hundred, so we log-scale it rather than reward raw review counts. Recency matters because staffing, management, and even facility conditions change, and a glowing review from 2019 doesn't tell you much about what happens at drop-off today. Completeness matters in a smaller way: a business that keeps its hours, phone number, website, and address current is a business that's actively maintaining its presence, which is a small but real signal of how it's run.

The honest limits

Businesses with few recent reviews get a low-confidence score, and we label them as such. A score built on three reviews from two years ago is not the same kind of evidence as one built on a hundred reviews from this year, and we don't pretend otherwise. We also don't republish reviews verbatim: we synthesize what they say into the sentiment signal, and we link out to Google so you can read the originals yourself and form your own read.
