What is nose work?

Nose work channels a dog's powerful olfactory instincts into a controlled activity where the dog searches for hidden treats, toys, or specific scents in a designated space. Unlike formal scent-detection sports, nose work in day care settings is primarily recreational and focused on mental enrichment rather than competition or training for detection work.

The activity works because dogs rely on smell far more than sight or hearing. When a dog engages in nose work, it activates the part of their brain responsible for scent processing, which provides the kind of focused mental exercise that tires a dog as effectively as physical play. A 15 to 30-minute nose work session can leave a dog satisfied and calm, reducing destructive or anxious behavior.

Many Durham-area day care centers offer nose work as an enrichment class or add-on activity, particularly for dogs that benefit from extra mental stimulation, senior dogs that need low-impact exercise, or dogs recovering from injury.
