What is a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test?
The Canine Good Citizen test is an American Kennel Club certification that assesses a dog's obedience, manners, and ability to behave reliably in public and social settings through ten standardized steps.
The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen program establishes a baseline for how well-trained and well-mannered a dog is in everyday situations. The test consists of ten steps that an evaluator observes:
- Accepting a friendly stranger and remaining calm

- Walking through a crowd without pulling or jumping
- Sitting and staying on command
- Coming when called
- Remaining calm around another dog
- Reacting calmly to distractions like loud noises or objects
- Tolerating being left with a stranger for a short time
